10 Important Things to Remember Before, During and After an In-Person Interview - Murad Code Rights Tool for Survivors
If you're a survivor of sexual violence, before you agree to an interview—whether with an investigator, researcher, journalist, or other practitioner documenting systematic and conflict-related sexual violence (SCRSV)—you deserve to know what to expect from the process and what you can ask for.
10 Important Things to Remember Before, During and After an In-Person Interview is a tool which helps you to understand your options, consider what questions to ask, and assess whether those who would like you to share your story with them respect you and will also respect your rights during the process.
The tool was developed in consultation with survivors and draws on the Global Code of Conduct for Gathering and Using Information about Systematic and Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (the "Murad Code").
Translations of this tool are available in Spanish and French. Arabic, Bosnian, Nepali, Swahili and Ukrainian translations are coming soon.
For practitioners: If you work with survivors, you can support them by sharing this tool when you first reach out to invite their participation in a documentation project or other information-gathering process. Providing it early demonstrates your commitment to transparency and survivor-centred practice, and gives survivors time to review it and prepare questions before making their decision.
This tool was developed with support from the government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada, and published in January 2026.
